BotW Zora royalty, but make it Ruto mainly got the idea from Creating a Champion, where the cinematic manager states this virtually their original plans for Mipha earlier they made her more shy/serenity: "The fact that she and Link have a past informs her character. She's known him since babyhood and, as a result, their relationship ended upwardly being almost besides intense"

I know someone like that!

The Air current Waker's Hyrule Castle is one of Zelda's near breathtaking sequences

Tumblr media

The Fable of Zelda: The Wind Waker has come a long style since its initial release. Originally reviled by some fans for its cel-shaded wait, it'southward oft hailed as a classic today. Luckily, many of us didn't have twenty years to appreciate its beautiful, fluid art fashion. Not but was Wind Waker a masterful case of temper and immersion back in 2002, it's aged better than other, more realistically-modeled games of its day. The HD re-release of Wind Waker on the Wii U in 2013 proved that this world needed very little polish to hold its own against newer titles. The seafaring gamble, sweeping music and expressive character animations all add up to make this an unforgettable feel, standing out even in a series as prolific every bit Zelda.

Entire articles could be written most whatsoever number of sequences from Wind Waker; the endlessly explorable Windfall Island, the shocking climactic catastrophe, or fifty-fifty the vast ocean itself. Those are all well and good, but the scene that has stuck in my mind all these years later involves sailing below the body of water and discovering the forgotten majesty of Hyrule Castle.

Tumblr media

Hyrule Castle is a time-honored staple of the Zelda franchise, appearing in nearly every unmarried entry. In Breath of the Wild, it'southward big plenty to be its own intricate and punishing multi-level dungeon. In other games, it functions more than equally a key story location; a place to meet Princess Zelda when you need her. Wind Waker uses the castle every bit a mode of centering the story at a fundamental point, reframing the player's conceptions of the world, and emphasizing just how constructive its use of color, space, and sound can exist.

youtube

The majority of your fourth dimension playing Current of air Waker is spent sailing and exploring above the sea. With the exception of some fishing trips, the game isn't as well smashing on showing you what'due south beneath the waves. That is, until y'all discover Hyrule Castle. In a breathtaking cutting-scene, Link descends on his trusty boat (The King of Crimson Lions) into the depths to discover an entire castle subconscious underwater. This reveal opens upward the world of Wind Waker in a way that nearly players weren't prepared for. If Hyrule Castle lies underneath the h2o, who knows what else could be waiting at that place? Ultimately, the game doesn't really explore this premise, but the implication of a larger world hiding but out of achieve is plenty to ship imaginations skyrocketing.

Tumblr media

If the discovery of Hyrule Castle is exciting, actually entering its walls is awe-inspiring. To emphasize the fact that this is a past version of the construction that's been lost to history, the entire location is literally frozen in time. In a hitting contrast to the residuum of Wind Waker's bold, cute earth, your beginning exposure to Hyrule Castle is cold, stark, and colorless. Link is a splotch of green and yellow among a sea of black and white compages. Fifty-fifty the enemies are greyscale and frozen in place, though seemingly ready to come alive at whatsoever moment. There is a dandy sense of foreboding all throughout this identify. Walking through, one feels the need to pace softly and carefully, as if information technology were a library or a museum full of frail artifacts. It exudes power and importance. In a word, it feels legendary.

Tumblr media

If yous examine the walls of the castle, you'll observe a few key clues to its by. Offset, some family portraits of Princess Zelda and the King of Hyrule, whom you've met already (whether you know it or non). That said, the most important and fascinating piece of history comes in the course of a statue at the centre of the castle. This statue depicts a legendary hero with his sword held high. He is, in fact, Link, but non this era's Link. This is Link, the hero of time from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. But in instance at that place was whatsoever dubiousness as to exactly which Link was being depicted, a stained drinking glass brandish in the castle basement illuminates things farther. Darunia, Ruto, Saria, and the other sages from Ocarina of Time are intricately carved into the stained drinking glass windows. What could be a mere easter egg feels like something more that. It comes across as a genuine connexion to another world.

Tumblr media

For most gamers who were alive in the 90s, the version of Hyrule Castle that appeared in Ocarina of Time was the about impactful. Information technology was our outset time getting to run across the legendary location implemented in three dimensions, but it all the same wasn't fully explorable. For the most part, Ocarina sees you sneaking forth the outskirts of the castle, catching glimpses of its halls through windows via the courtyard. More important than the castle itself was the overall bear upon that Ocarina of Fourth dimension left on an entire generation of gamers.

Wind Waker acts equally a distant sequel to Ocarina of Fourth dimension, taking place hundreds of years later on that globe has been flooded. This connectedness to Ocarina is part of what makes Current of air Waker's Hyrule Castle experience so special. With a few notable exceptions, most Zelda games do little to acknowledge their predecessors. Wind Waker, on the other paw, is a game that reveres its past. Its absorbing opening cutscene retells Hyrule's history and teaches us that the fable of a hero in a green tunic is widely known in this globe. With this introduction, Wind Waker's Link becomes more of an avatar for the player than he has ever been before. This Link aspires to the great and heroic deeds of legends by, just as nosotros do. It'southward a subtle twist that even so makes a huge departure. Upon discovering that shrine to Ocarina of Time's characters and history, 1 imagines that Link feels the same sense of awe and wonder that we do as players. Moreover, this wasn't merely a lived-in world; this was a world that the thespian had more than likely lived in themselves. This was a connexion to our ain cornball pasts, executed in a fashion that no other medium could truly replicate.

Tumblr media

The bodily puzzle required of you upon inbound Hyrule Castle isn't lengthy or complicated. Move a few blocks into position and y'all'll exist rewarded with access to the hidden chamber, where of course yous'll receive the coveted Master Sword. All in all, you lot could get in and out of the castle within five minutes or less. Personally, I took my time before going downward that passage during my first playthrough, opting instead to stride the frozen halls; my footsteps echoing off the high vaulted ceilings, wondering what life was similar here before the fall. In fact, I was then taken with the temper, I was virtually a little disappointed when the castle's colour and vitality were finally restored. This too is a key role of the experience, nonetheless.

Tumblr media

Upon first inbound, you're an unseen visitor in a forgotten realm. When leaving, yous feel like you lot've really been transported to the living past. Agile moblin and darknut guards await you for a fun bout of slashing and weapon-stealing. The newly restored ruby carpets and polished floor tiles are merely equally ripe for exploration as you curiosity at the differences betwixt then and now. This contrast is essential, and the 2d one-half of the sequence is no less thrilling than the first.

Tumblr media

Most Zelda games attach to the series' successful formula, and that formula near always includes Link attaining the Master Sword. There's some potent competition in this franchise, only for my rupees, no other version of this sequence leaves as lasting an impression as Air current Waker's. It's a moment that feels impactful and revelatory without being bombastic or overblown. It offers a moment of quiet reflection in what is otherwise a raucous, joyous risk game, earlier returning yous to the action with style. Its brevity contributes to its power, likewise, with the moment never overstaying its welcome. The game gives you just enough to feel the weight of this identify and its grand history before sending you on your way once again. It's a slap-up flake of restraint, and an example of simply how brilliant Eiji Aunoma and the rest of Nintendo's development squad can be.

Unfortunately, the Hd re-release of Wind Waker altered the castle'due south colour palette, reducing some of its touch on, merely there's still plenty at that place to capeesh. With any luck, Nintendo will make some version of the game bachelor on the Switch before too long. If you lot practise pick the game up again for a new playthrough, have some time to linger in Hyrule Castle's halls and consider its value. Information technology'south an adventure worth revisiting.

Monthly Media Roundup (June-July 2019)

Well, I neglected doing a mail service last calendar month, and now some other has passed. I haven't done also much, about 3 games each month and not annihilation else media-wise, and so let's get it all washed right now!

Little Nightmares (PC/Steam):

Tumblr media

These types of spooky "cinematic platformers", like LIMBO and INSIDE, never really scare me or fill me with dread. Office of this may be that due to the trappings of cinematic platformers. Checkpoints are very fair, and nothing is also difficult because priority is on delivering the story. Little side challenges exist, like trying to light all the candles or break all the porcelain dolls in the brusque 3-hr run of the game, merely these are also pretty reasonable, even if you're in a chase sequence. I'm reminded of a youtuber I briefly followed who talked about how horror games aren't scary anymore, and somewhat unintentionally delivered the point that equally yous become accustomed to the limits of a medium, and therefore are less probable to be surprised by it, you're also much less probable to be scared by information technology. It's a somewhat unfortunate and inevitable trade-off to becoming more than invested in a hobby. When I was a child, all games held infinite possibility, and then an NPC in Harvest Moon telling me that wild dogs came out at night led me to think that night time held the possibility of ENEMIES in a game without combat. What the NPC meant was that you should build fences. As an adult who has spent my life playing games, I can tell you that a game is about never going to put you in a situation without the ways to bargain with it. If there's going to exist combat, you're going to know how combat works before an ambush. If there's an escape sequence, you're going to be in an area that facilitates your escape (often a narrow space that leads yous in a direction while also making information technology as harrowing as possible). Games are theme park rides, and while learning that tin make seemingly difficult games more manageable and enjoyable, information technology also gradually disillusions you. Thankfully, there are always new things to learn if you lot go along an open up mind.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS):

Tumblr media

2019 has been nigh thoroughly enjoying the games that I considered overrated in my immature adulthood. I joked on twitter that 70% of my personality was disliking Concluding Fantasy VII and Ocarina of Time, and honestly, it might every bit well have been. I earned a lot of undeserved respect in higher through arrogantly spouting hot takes about "objectively good art", and a lot of people reasonably assumed this must hateful I know exactly what I'chiliad talking about. The way I process fine art and media is much looser and more than personal than it used to be, partially due to called-for out and condign too exhausted to deal with other arrogant people. I think a lot about how tiring I had to exist for other people to talk to. Watching Tim Rogers drain his personal trauma into his video series on the subtleties of FF7's japanese script was the most instrumental in turning me back toward the game. When Square Enix revealed gameplay footage of the remake at E3 this twelvemonth, I was hooting and hollering with the longtime fans.

Merely, this is about Zelda, not Final Fantasy. I had already played through OoT, as hurriedly every bit possible, just to say I had done information technology. It was the better function of a decade ago, at the urging of a then-girlfriend who had nostalgia for it. Frustrations with the Water Temple in the original version are valid despite information technology being largely well designed, due to some minor shortsighted-ness that blows up into nagging issues, but I think I had put myself in the headspace to dislike it from the become-get. Similarly, I didn't want to do any collecting in the game every bit a whole. I had convinced myself that there was no joy to exist establish in collecting in games (a accept bereft of nuance). When the point of Zelda games is to inspire the player to explore every nook and cranny in search of rewards, going in as a histrion and stubbornly trying to avoid any of that ensures that you'll miss the indicate of the whole experience. I'g not sure what it was that fabricated me desire to get back. It might be that I wanted to prove my younger, cockier self wrong, and pave over my former evaluations with more nuance.

It certainly worked out that way, as several previous opinions inverse entirely. Ruto used to be annoying to me, but was now 1 of my favorite characters. Doing all the trivial minigames felt rewarding in itself, and in plow I was unexpectedly rewarded with important items (they actually did bet everything on the entire world they'd made). The Water Temple, now tweaked for a scrap more than convenience in the 3DS version, was extremely interesting. The side quest to acquire the Biggoron Sword was easily doable, whereas I had grown upwardly assuming it incommunicable. And the story which had never appealed to me (considering I wouldn't let it) now felt relatable in a way I hadn't expected. Link intends to do adept, just through unfortunate circumstances and honest mistakes becomes unable to have part in the world, and it spirals downwards for years as he remains trapped in a room, aging but inactive. Something about that mirrors my own experiences with low. Sure, Link, can travel back to his younger self at whatever time, merely at that place'southward all the same a powerlessness in the inability to affect the vii year gap. You tin can flash back, but y'all can't change what yous've lost.

Banjo-Kazooie (N64):

Tumblr media

Yous know, as a kid I probably would have just accepted that Grunty was evil, just as an adult it's hard not to see her as a product of her environment. Obsessed with asking her cauldron who the objectively prettiest in the earth is, she seeks out and kidnaps the younger daughter given the championship in an endeavor to steal her youth. Every character in the game describes Grunty equally ugly, rather than evil, and even her own sis shows up in every expanse to tell you how gross she is and how terrible her lifestyle is. I concluded up sympathizing with her more than anyone else. I've merely played half an hour of Banjo-Tooie, but it was a relief in multiple means to see her pin to directly up murder subsequently rising from the expressionless.

Despite playing Donkey Kong Country multiple times growing up, I'd never really grown to love Rare's in-firm aesthetic of large-eyed cartoony animals. It might be hypocritical, merely Smash Ultimate's reveals for both Male monarch K. Rool and Banjo (and) Kazooie made me see the charm in these characters. Something about how Boom canonizes characters as essential pieces of game history always causes me to drop whatsoever negative pretense and adopt them every bit favorites. Information technology's a niggling intellectually hypocritical, but I can't help liking what I like. After the trailer for B-K in Smash, I immediately started up the original game in Retroarch. Thankfully the core I used was advanced enough to play the game without bug (the same cannot be said for Tooie), as other alternatives were expensive or hard to get a hold of. While the slightly-mean sense of humor and talking animate objects took a fleck of getting used to, I become it at present. I get the children'due south show aesthetic they were aiming for, and I appreciate the feel of the physics and command of the interspecies friendship of the protagonists working in tandem with each other, fifty-fifty if the game is at times quite difficult.

Dragon Quest I, II, & III (SNES):

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media

Yes, I did play through three JRPGs in a row! And yes, you might discover that the hero of Dragon Quest XI (and VIII, and 4, and III) was also announced for Smash Ultimate. They recently released, as of this writing! A lot of what I've been playing has been influenced by outside forces, whether it exist Nintendo news or friends, only I'm not bothered at all when otherwise I might not have the free energy to play anything. The games I've been playing are likewise ones I've intended to play for a while, so the excuses have been convenient for me. Though, actually, this decision had less to do with the Smash announcement and more than to do with the upcoming re-release of DQXI, which seems to be related to the original three games, known every bit The Erdrick Trilogy. I had heard that you tin play XI on its own, but that there is an extra layer of appreciation to be had if you've played the original trilogy. Me being me, I naturally queued them upwards. I chose the older fan translations of the SNES remakes, and though I did finish them, I can tell you that they accept their fair share of bugs (DQII even has a game breaking glitch I had to finagle through using save states beyond multiple versions, phew). Likewise that, those old translations lack the modernistic localizations of the games, then if they namedrop something in XI, at that place'southward a hazard it'll go over my head. Oops! If you lot want to play these games, the all-time versions are currently on mobile phones.

Around a decade agone I was in early on higher, with no friends except for those nonetheless in high school or at another university. I was very solitary and nervous. I started playing Dragon Quest V purely past chance, and it served as the perfect salve for that loneliness, with its lone child protagonist traveling around the world accumulating found family. It's i of the more poignant and cathartic JRPGs I've e'er played, and for the next decade I would actually be bothered that the rest of the games didn't live up to the catharsis of DQV.

In revisiting the roots of the series, and playing it through to see how it develops from title to title, it finally clicked with me, and continues to click with me, as I keep learning more about the series. Rather than comparing every entry to DQV, I should accept been comparing them in social club. This might sound obvious, but it really did make a earth of divergence to see that V's narrative is placed on top of the foundation the previous games ready, rather than a singular case of lightning in a bottle. And the games have always featured loneliness, only in differing contexts, and to different degrees. The hero of DQI is most entirely alone through the full game. In DQII, the princess comes from lone circumstances, and one of the princes comes down with a sickness that leaves him temporarily unable to help his friends. In DQIII you tin brand every bit many team members every bit y'all want, but you grow up with an absent father, and your ain good deeds receive bloodshot resolution. They are all games built on simple settings and followed through with empathy. The series is at times disarmingly heavy, which is office of what makes the games as memorable as they are. Y'all're never quite as prepared for Dragon Quest as you think you are.

As of this writing I'one thousand currently half-mode through a replay of Dragon Quest Iv, and I'1000 enjoying it a lot more. I'm looking forward to replaying V. I have no idea what VI will be like. I've heard it's a lower point in the series, but that's what I heard virtually Two also, and I concluded up loving it, so who knows. Dragon Quest is expert.

---

Well, I managed to catch up. I didn't get into the finer details of the DQ playthroughs, simply DQIII is honestly so good I don't want to spoil it for anyone (yous should play these games). Maybe in August I'll really get dorsum to watching and reading things. Maybe I'll try to continue these things to a single paragraph per item, to brand it more manageable to read. Let me know what yous think, if you call up.

A Dissimilar TIMELINE

The goddess collection, a series of four books consisting of Hyrule Historia, Arts and Artifacts, LoZ encyclopedia, and LoZ: creating a champion, states that the overall timeline of the Legend of Zelda series spans and so many years, that in present day Hyrule, it is uncertain which are historical fact, and which are fairy tales. While some are assumed to exist fact based on things that nevertheless exist in present twenty-four hour period Hyrule. The following is a timeline of the events that I believe are the factual events of Hyrule, using Jiff of the Wild as "Present twenty-four hour period" Hyrule I have bolded and italicized things that are not stated in these books, but are either fan theories or me trying to add context to inconsistencies

Era abridgement legend PHK: Pre-Hyrule Kingdom  HKE: Hyrule Kingdom Era AFH: After the Fall of Hyrule

PHK ??? The events of Skyward Sword take place. The principal sword is created, and the demon king Demise lays a expletive that volition begin an countless bike of conflict between the hero, 1 with the claret of the goddess, and an incarnation of the demon's hate.

Hyrule is founded. Start of the Hyrule Kingdom Era HKE ??? Ganondorf is built-in to an unknown member of the Gerudo tribe. Being the solitary male of the Gerudo, he is fabricated their king in accordance with Gerudo tradition. The child is raised by Kotake and Koume, a pair of exceptionally anile Gerudo women adept in the dark arts.

HKE ??? A ceremonious state of war is fought in Hyrule. It is unknown exactly who the belligerents of this war were, or fifty-fifty what sparked the war, though the Hylians are believed to be major players. A gravely injured woman flees from the state of war with her babe and enters the deep forest where she encounters the Kokiri and the Deku tree. The female parent soon passes abroad from her injuries and the baby is taken in by the Kokiri and raised as one of them.

HKE ??? The events of Ocarina of fourth dimension take place. Ganondorf invades Hyrule to merits the Triforce for himself and seize absolute ability. He is defeated by the hero, princess, and sages of the era. Historians disagree on the particulars of this issue. Some believe the hero failed to defeat Ganondorf. Others say he was successful, while others believe that Ganondorf's plans were thwarted before he was able to find the triforce. Any the instance, historians are in agreement that the actions of the hero, princess, and sages of the era were instrumental in the events.

HKE ??? Over countless centuries, Ganon revives and is pushed dorsum past the hero and the princess of Hyrule again and again, sealed away, killed, reincarnated only to exist sealed or killed again. Ganondorf eventually gives up on reincarnation, likely viewing his mortal body as a weakness that lead to his countless defeats.

HKE: ten,000 years before the fall of Hyrule i. The guardians and the divine beasts are constructed using advanced Sheikah technology as a preemptive measure against the inevitable return of Ganon. 2 of them are named for ancient sages; Ruto and Nabooru, who long ago helped the princess and the hero save Hyrule. The origins of the names of the other 2 machines, Vah Medoh and Vah Rudania, remains unknown. Lost to fourth dimension. (Vah Rudania is likely named for Darunia, the Goron sage of fire in OoT who lived in the same era as Ruto and Nabooru. While there was a graphic symbol named Mido in past games, he was a Kokiri, and more importantly, non a sage. The only known Rito sage was Medly, the sage of World in the Wind Waker. Curiously, combining the names of Medly and Mido gets you "Medo" I do have another theory on this though, which I will get into in a dissimilar post.)

2. Ganon returns as Calamity ganon, a being of pure malice and hate, simply is again defeated by the hero and princess, with the aid of the guardians and the divine beasts.

3. Some time later, the Sheikah, who constructed the divine beasts, are banished from Hyrule, as the hylians grew fearful of them and their advanced technology. The Sheikah wandered as nomads for many years, and eventually abandoned their technology in gild to return to Hyrule. A faction of the Sheikah split up off and became the Yiga clan at this fourth dimension, swearing themselves to Ganon to get revenge on the hyrulian regal family who banished their people from Hyrule.

Evidently, for the next several m years, Hyrule was peaceful, but legends of the demon, and the hero and princess who fought it once more and once more persisted.

HKE: 16 years Before the fall Princess Zelda is built-in Link is presumably born in the aforementioned twelvemonth.

Unlike past eras where the races were largely segregated, Hyrule of this era seems very unified. Urbosa, the leader of the Gerudo and the unnamed Queen of Hyrule, leaders of two races who were long ago bitter enemies, regard one some other every bit sisters, with the queen even travelling into the desert with her newborn daughter to introduce the princess to the Gerudo chief.

HKE: x Before the autumn The Queen of Hyrule dies of unknown causes.

HKE: Betwixt 10 and i year(south) Earlier the autumn The divine beasts and guardians, who had long since become legends, are rediscovered, excavated and studied in preparation for the return of Ganon. Champions are chosen from each of the four races of Hyrule to pilot the machines. Daruk, leader of the Gorons, Revali, the greatest flyer and marksman of the Rito, Urbosa the leader of the Gerudo, and Mipha, the Princess of the Zora. Link, the son of a knight and a knight in preparation himself, is chosen by the master sword to be the new Hero and Princess Zelda'south personal body guard.

HKE: The Kingdom of Hyrule falls Calamity ganon breaks complimentary of its seal. Anticipating the divine beasts and guardians, it uses its malice to decadent them and take command. The four champions are killed The King is killed The hero falls Princess Zelda'southward powers finally awaken, and Cataclysm ganon is sealed abroad within Hyrule castle, nevertheless, she too is sealed with it. Hyrule falls. The Divine beasts and guardians go dormant.

AFH 100 The events of Breath of the wild take place. Calamity Ganon is destroyed and the process of rebuilding Hyrule begins.

AFH 101~ A mummified male Gerudo is discovered past Link and Princess Zelda deep inside a cavern... He'southward not dead.

BotW images I would love to see simply can't make or don't have the money to pay someone to brand

Brusk disclaimer: I am non asking anyone to make these images, I just wish they existed, and if they practise, point me in their direction. If I accept inspired y'all to draw/make something, wonderful! You don't fifty-fifty accept to tag me. This is only me ranting crusade I've got nothing ameliorate to do.

Sidon: Sidon is a very powerful and potent Zora Prince, and even though I beloved the images with the more sensitive side of him with Link (although I don't ship them myself), I wish there were more than images of him fighting with Mipha's Trident, or making his way to Vah Ruta and talking with the animal to discover ghost Mipha continuing at the superlative smiling at him. Sidon is a fantastic grapheme then popular with fans that Nintendo put him in Mipha's flashback in the DLC pack. I want to run into him on adventures with Link and the others, questioning Yunobo's meals, and gawking at how he and Teba are both related to Princess Ruto and all of that. Which brings me to my next wish.

The New Champions: Nosotros all know who the new champions are (the ones with voice actors in the game) and I think the images of the past Champions socializing together are fantastic, but what about the future of Hyrule? I call up I've seen 5 or 6 images of the New Champions having dinner with Zelda and Link, but non much else. Let's see some team piece of work as they take downwards a Guardian that's still under Ganon's control (somehow), or making jokes about the habits and "tricks" they tin can do, or a training montage of them working together, or fifty-fifty Riju introducing her sand walrus to Sidon for the first time. Simply something more than them merely having dinner.

Easter Eggs: This last ane is really dumb and I have no expectations of anyone actually doing this because, why would they? But I would love to come across mural images with mayhap a character or two in the foreground only in the groundwork a bunch of koroks just hanging out in a tree or something. Little stuff like that in the background of fantastical mural paradigm is something I beloved to see (from any genre or show that I watch/sympathise the reference to), and I feel like it's a really absurd way to test yourself and see if you can make those tiny details with water colors or chalk or any medium you use.

Call up, this is not a challenge, this is just stuff I wish I saw more than of when it comes to BotW fan art. But It'South FAN Art, do whatever you want, don't let the ramblings of a crazy guy tell you lot what to do, but if it inspires you, fantastic.

Okay, that's all for now. Adieu.
